Lake Pichola

Named after Picholi village this artificial fresh-water lake was created in 1362 CE by Pichhu Banjara, a gypsy who transported grain, during the reign of Maharana Lakha. It is the oldest lake in the city.
Famous for its picturesque background, Lake Pichola covers an area of around 6.96 square kilometers. Maximum depth is around 8.5 meters. Boating is a popular activity here. You can reach the lake by bus, tonga, auto rickshaw or cab.

Eklingji Temple

Located around 22 kilometers from Udaipur, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The deity, a four-faced idol, is made of black stone. Eklingji Temple is an architectural wonder. The sanctum sanctorum has four doors. Each door is studded with gems.

Eklingji Temple History

The original temple at Eklingji was built by king Bappa Rawal in the eighth century. It was destroyed by the Delhi Sultanate rulers. The earliest extent idol was installed by Hammir Singh in the 14th century.
Hammir Singh, who was also known as Rana Hammira carried out extensive renovations to the main temple. Rana Kumbha (Kumbhakarna) rebuilt the temple in the 15th century. A 1460 inscription describes him as "the personal servant of Eklinga".
In late 15th century, Ghiyath Shah of Malwa Sultanate attacked Mewar and destroyed the temple. Kumbhakarna's son Rana Raimal defeated and captured Ghiyath Shah, and obtained a ransom for his release. With this ransom, he patronized the last major rebuilding of the Eklingji temple complex and installed the present idol at the main temple.

City Palace

This beautiful palace complex was built over a period of around four centuries by rulers of the Mewar dynasty. This architectural marvel, which is built in marble and granite, is located on the banks of Lake Pichola. It is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan and the most visited tourist attraction in Udaipur.
The main part of this alluring palace is now preserved as a museum, which displays many artefacts. The City Palace museum is entered through the Ganesh Deori, which means the door of Lord Ganesh.

Bagore-ki-Haveli

Bagore-ki-Haveli was built by Amir Chand Badwa, a Mewar prime minister. This 18th-century haveli (mansion), which has more than 100 rooms, is on the waterfront of Lake Pichola. This gracious ancient structure has been converted into a museum, where traditional costumes, modern art, a huge collection of Mewar paintings and glassworks are displayed. The Bagore Ki Haveli Dance Show is popular among tourists.

Fateh Sagar Lake

This artificial lake is named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar. The lake contains three islands. The largest among these islands has a garden, a zoo and a boat-shaped restaurant. The other island has many beautiful fountains. The third island houses Udaipur Solar Observatory.

Jag Mandir

Also known as Lake Garden Palace, Jag Mandir is a palace located on an island in the Lake Pichola. It was constructed by Maharana Karan Singh II in 1620, added to by his successor Maharana Jagat Singh, and then changed very little until the last few years when it was partly converted into another (smaller) hotel.

Jagdish Temple

Jagdish Temple is located on the RJ SH 50, in the City Palace complex. People have been worshipping in this large Hindu temple since 1651. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh.
This 3-storied, 79-ft-tall architectural marvel is an excellent example of Indo-Aryan style of architecture. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. A huge 4-armed image of Lord Vishnu is housed in the main shrine. The idol was carved out of a black rock.
Two huge stone elephants welcome you at the doorway. 32 marble steps lead you to the main shrine. You will find beautifully carved pillars, painted walls, decorated ceilings, luscious halls and more here. The temple is open between 4.15 am to 1 pm and 5.15 pm to 8 pm.

Gateway of India

Siddhivinayak Temple History

This temple was built on November 19 1801. Not many people visited its small 3.6 metre square premises. One and a quarter centuries back, a renowned Hindu saint Shri Akkalkot Swami Samarth ordered his disciple Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj, who was also a fervent devotee of Lord Ganesh and Gayatri Mantra, to bury two divine idols in front of the temple.
The saint also prophesized that 21 years later a Mandar tree would grow in that place with a Ganesha idol manifesting from its branches. The prophecy came true as told and thereon the temple surged to great popularity with multitudes visiting it.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Railway Station

This historic railway station, which is in Victorian-Gothic style of architecture, was built in 1887. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in Bori Bunder area.

Marine Drive

Marine Drive is officially known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road. This 3.6-kilometer-long arc shaped boulevard in South Mumbai is also known as Queen's necklace because of its shape. When viewed from an elevated point at night, yellow street lights make the road look like a beautiful necklace.
Marine Drive is at walkable distance from Churchgate and Marine Lines stations. Cabs are available from anywhere in Mumbai. It is a popular landmark in the city.

Mumbai is a relatively safe city. However, it is advisable to take basic precautions. Avoid travelling in local trains during peak hours, especially if you have children. Avoid travelling in completely empty trains. For sightseeing, hire a car service with an informative guide.
If you are assaulted or harassed in public, scream, create a scene, especially if you are a woman. People in Mumbai are very helpful. It is better to use dial-a-cab service rather than the regular black-and-yellow cabs.
