This beautiful temple was first built thousands of years ago by Vajranabha, grandson of Lord Shri Krishna. It has been built by Hindus and destroyed by foreign invaders at least five times.
The present day temple is the result of efforts by people like Late Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. He set up “Sri Krishna Janma Bhoomi Trust” in 1951 with the help of Late Seth Jugal Kishoreji Birla.
The reconstruction work started on October 15th 1953 and completed in Feb 1982. The pieces of history recovered from the temple complex are on display for the public in the museum that is located nearby.
This Hindu temple is divided into three parts: the Garbha Griha – the exact place of birth, Keshavadeva and the Bhagvata Bhavan. There is a temple for Ma Yogamaya at the entrance of the temple.

Radha Kund is around 27 kilometers from Mathura. This holy pond is well-known for its peace and tranquillity. Thousands of devotees of Lord Krishna bathe here at midnight on Krishnashtami. It is the most sacred place in the world for Gaudiya Vaisnavas.
Legend has it that a demon named Aristasura, in the form of a bull, was killed by Lord Krishna. Radha and her friends told him that for killing an animal he had to purify himself by taking bath in holy places.
The Lord said, “Why should I visit all these places, I will bring water from all these places here and then bathe in them.” He then struck his heel on the ground and all the waters of the holy places entered into Syama Kund.
In a competitive spirit, Radha and her friends also created a kund by digging the earth with their bangles. All the holy rivers then petitioned her to allow them to enter her new kunda. Thus Radha Kund appeared.
Radha Kund is the holiest place in all of Brahma’s creation. Radha Kund and Shyama Kund represent the eyes of Govardhan, which is in the shape of a peacock. This is the place where Radha and Krishna performed their most intimate and most sweet pastimes.
